A report by Ember, a think tank, revealed that wind and solar power generation in the European Union increased by 46% from 2019 to 2023. The surge displaced a fifth of the bloc’s fossil fuel generation.
The increase in the utilisation of renewable energy sources aligns with the European Commission’s goals. The Commission is targeting to achieve 45% of renewable energy sources by 2030.
With the European Parliament elections right around the corner, there are speculations regarding the difficulty of passing new climate and climate goals laws.
Although several policies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are already in place, more laws are in the pipeline.
The laws in the pipelines, which are yet to be reviewed, will probably be considered for discussion in the next five years. The law reviews will face a different legislation picture as the EU Parliament elections are scheduled to take place from June 6-9.

According to the report, solar and wind capacity in the EU has surged by 65% since 2019, when the new European Commission took office. The report mentions that the EU’s wind capacity rose 31% and reached 219 gigawatts (GW) in 2023.
In addition, solar capacity in the EU has also risen. It increased more than twofold to reach 257 GW, equivalent to installing over 230,000 solar panels every day over four years.
