Saipem and Divento partner to deploy STAR 1 technology for Italy's pioneering floating wind projects, 7 Seas Med and Ichnusa Wind Power.

Saipem, together with Divento, a joint venture comprising Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), GreenIT, 7 Seas Wind Power, and NiceTechnology, has entered into a collaboration agreement to utilize Saipem’s STAR 1 technology for two groundbreaking floating wind projects in Italy. The 7 Seas Med project in Sicily and Ichnusa Wind Power in Sardinia aim to participate in the upcoming auctions under the Fer2 Decree.

Saipem created STAR 1, a state-of-the-art technology to produce semi-submersible floating wind foundations. The technology is supported by Saipem’s vast experience in subsea infrastructure design, construction, and installation. STAR 1 offers a lightweight, easy-to-build solution, perfect for innovative floating wind projects with simple assembly and maintenance.

7 Seas Med and Ichnusa Wind Power

The 7 Seas Med project, located in the Strait of Sicily, will mark Italy’s inaugural large-scale floating wind farm. With a planned capacity of 252 MW, the project will produce around 800 GWh annually. The project is the first floating wind initiative in Italy to receive the environmental compatibility decree from the Ministry of Environment.

Ichnusa Wind Power, situated off the south-west coast of Sardinia, will be of higher capacity at 504 MW, with a projected annual output of 1.6 TWh of renewable energy. Both projects are in development, awaiting confirmation of the regulatory framework for Italy’s upcoming auctions on new renewable technologies, including floating offshore wind.
