First Bus has revealed plans for a substantial £89 million investment aimed at accelerating its transition to zero-emission buses and infrastructure across four regions. This initiative, supported by £16 million in funding from the Department for Transport’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme, is poised to revolutionize public transportation while significantly reducing carbon emissions.
In collaboration with local authorities, First Bus will introduce 178 zero-emission buses and enhance infrastructure in strategic locations. Upgrades in power and infrastructure at depot sites in Taunton, Weston-super-Mare, Basildon, and Hengrove in Bristol will future-proof the sites for the transition to a fully electric fleet in the coming years.
The initiative aims to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions, particularly benefiting rural communities and inter-urban routes where the deployment of zero-emission buses will have a notable impact.
This announcement follows the successful operation of a zero-emission bus fleet at First Bus’s Norwich depot, marking a significant milestone outside of London. Depots in York and Leicester are set to follow suit, with their own zero-emission bus networks expected to be operational by the end of Spring 2024.
Upon completion, First Bus will operate over 800 zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure across 14 depot sites in the UK, constituting at least 18% of its overall UK bus fleet. This progress aligns with the company’s commitment to achieving a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2035.
Janette Bell, Managing Director for First Bus, expressed excitement about the transformative projects, highlighting the collaborative efforts with local authority partners. She emphasized the immediate benefits for customers, including improved air quality and enhanced customer experience, as the state-of-the-art vehicles are deployed into service.
