Italy’s Terna, the company that manages the Italian national electricity transmission grid, said that renewable sources overtook fossil fuel production for the first time during the first six months of 2024. Around 43.8% of energy demand was covered by renewable sources.
Production from fossil fuels decreased 19% compared to the same period in 2023, with an even more significant reduction in coal-based production.
Additionally, between January and June 2024, renewable hydroelectric production achieved a record result, according to Terna.
The operating capacity of renewables increased by 3,691 MW (including 3,341 MW in solar power), which is 1,074 MW higher than the same period of the previous year.
In the month of June 2024, 88.5% of Italian electricity demand was covered by national production, while the remainder came from the balance of electricity exchanged with other countries.
Additionally, on a specific day, 22 June, hourly production from renewable energy sources reached a historic peak of 33.2 GW for an hour in the afternoon.
Terna also added that between June 2023 and June 2024, installed solar and wind capacity increased by 6,831 MW, reaching 46,321 MW.
