Solar battery sales jump 26% in German households in 2024
On Thursday, the industry association BVES announced that sales of home solar electricity storage batteries in Germany could increase by 26% this year, driven by a growing number of households choosing affordable and renewable energy sources.
Data from the National Solar Association BSW revealed last month that German households had installed 3.7 million rooftop solar photovoltaic systems, indicating a growing market potential.
“The trend to self-sufficiency and to safeguarding supply is driving the installation of energy storage systems in buildings and private households,” said BVES, presenting an industry-commissioned study undertaken by advisory group 3Energie Consulting.(3EC)

Before residential batteries were available for storing home-produced energy, electricity generated by photovoltaic panels was solely directed to the grid.
However, with the decreasing costs due to economies of scale, many families, especially those living in detached homes, are investing in batteries.
According to BSW, 1.2 million people owned batteries in January 2024. 3EC suggested that the figure could reach 2.0 million by the end of 2024.

The desire of homeowners to achieve independence from centralized suppliers is a key factor driving sales.
Additionally, the availability of heat pumps and electric cars, which can be powered using home-produced electricity, contributes to this trend.
Home storage solutions also encompass heat and hydrogen applications, which are expected to experience growth, according to 3EC.
However, it’s worth noting that the limited availability of labor for installing such hardware poses a challenge across all storage sectors.
