In a press release, the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) announced that a record-breaking 11 gigawatts (GW) of new solar module manufacturing capacity came online in the US during Q1 2024.
According to the press release, this growth marks the United States’ “largest quarter of solar manufacturing growth” in the country’s history.
The SEIA released a report on the solar market in the US for the second quarter of 2024, along with Wood Mackenzie. According to that report, the US’s gross solar module manufacturing capacity is now over 26 GW annually.
Besides the manufacturing capacity reaching a new high, the installed capacity also reached a new milestone. According to the press release, the installed solar capacity in the US now stands at 11.8 GW.

This addition to the solar grid brings the total installed capacity in the US to 200 GW.
The release also mentions that research conducted by SEIA and Wood Mackenzie found that the US installed 40 GW of solar capacity in 2023 and is expected to install another 40 GW this year.
The release also featured comments from some of the top officials involved in drafting the report.
Michelle Davis, head of global solar at Wood Mackenzie and lead author of the report, said, “The U.S. solar industry continues to show strength in terms of deployments.”
She added, “At the same time, the solar industry faces a number of challenges to its continued growth, including the availability of labour, high voltage equipment constraints, and continued trade policy uncertainty.”
The release states that the total solar capacity in the US is believed to be twice the current capacity in the next five years.
