More than 60 human rights and environmental organizations have called on Apple to take action regarding the detention of climate experts in Vietnam, a key manufacturing hub for the tech giant.
Among those detained is Ngo Thi To Nhien, the executive director of the Vietnam Initiative for Energy Transition (VIET), accused by Vietnamese authorities of improperly accessing documents. Activists argue that the charges are unfounded, with the United States and the United Nations also criticizing the detentions.
Given Apple’s significant presence in Vietnam and its commitment to human rights and climate justice, activists believe the company has a responsibility to speak out. Apple manufactures several products in Vietnam and has previously advocated for renewable energy initiatives in the country.
However, the company has yet to publicly address the detention of climate activists, prompting concerns about potential violations of its own environmental and human rights policies.
