First Solar announced its acquisition of patents related to the manufacturing of Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TOPCon) crystalline-silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic (PV) solar cells.
The company secured the US patent and related international counterparts through its acquisition of TetraSun, Inc.

In 2013, purchased TetraSun and its intellectual property portfolio. Before being acquired, the California startup was the first to develop exclusive cell architecture and manufacturing methods for large-format crystalline silicon wafers.
Following its acquisition of the patents, First Solar has launched an investigation into several c-Si solar manufacturers for possible infringement of the secured patents.
The patents comprise issued patents in the US, Canada, Mexico, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan, and Australia, among other places, with validities stretching to 2030.
They also consist of pending patent applications in the European Union and Japan. First Solar strongly believes in the worth and power of these patents and intends to conduct a thorough examination of any products potentially infringing the patents.

He added, “While First Solar is a world leader in the development and commercialization of advanced thin film photovoltaics, our R&D and intellectual property portfolio spans several semiconductor platforms, including crystalline silicon, as we pursue multiple pathways towards our goal of developing the next transformative, disruptive solar technology.”
He also mentioned that they are investigating several leading crystalline silicon solar manufacturers for potential infringement of their patents.
He emphasised that if infringement is found, they intend to challenge the ability of potential infringers to legally manufacture, assemble, and sell infringing TOPCon technology by pursuing enforcement, licensing, and/or other measures to safeguard their rights.
