Hyundai launches EcoGram in Gurugram
In a move towards environmental sustainability, the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF) has unveiled EcoGram in Gurugram, Haryana, showcasing its commitment to eco-friendly initiatives.
Operational since October 2022, this project comprises a Biogas plant and material recovery facility aimed at efficient waste management.
Hyundai claimed that the initiative has already made a substantial impact by reducing carbon emissions, saving approximately 1.4 million kg of CO2 emissions. Waste from over 2000 households and the Hyundai Motor India Headquarters in Gurugram is processed, underscoring the project’s scale and significance in mitigating environmental harm.
With an investment of Rs. 2.13 crore, EcoGram stands as a beacon of sustainable waste management, boasting an annual electricity generation capacity of 76 megawatts. Hyundai asserted that the facility is currently self-sustaining and plans to supply electricity to the grid shortly, showcasing its effectiveness in converting waste to energy.
Mr. Puneet Anand, AVP & Vertical Head – Corporate Affairs at Hyundai Motor India Limited, emphasized the project’s role in setting a benchmark for sustainable waste management in cities. He stated, “EcoGram is an initiative towards sustainable management of waste in metropolitan cities.”
The EcoGram Biogas Plant & Material Recovery Facility, situated in Gurugram, processes both wet and dry waste. Wet waste is converted into Biogas for electricity production, while dry waste is segregated for recycling. The plant can handle 2,000 kg of wet waste and 5,000 kg of dry waste daily, demonstrating robust capacity for efficient waste management.
Since its inception, EcoGram has been claimed to significantly reduced the carbon footprint by processing large volumes of household waste. The facility’s ability to generate 200 kilowatts of electricity daily underscores its potential in renewable energy. Hyundai claimed that it has generated 40 megawatts of electricity from processed biogas, illustrating the viability of waste-to-energy projects in urban settings.
Operational support from the Metropolitan Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) ensures smooth waste collection and processing. Hyundai highlighted community involvement in sustainable practices through partnerships with Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs), encompassing over 2000 households.
