In 2023, Maersk’s ECO Delivery Ocean product achieved a significant milestone, with more than 660,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) transported on green fuels, resulting in a remarkable reduction of over 683,000 tonnes of greenhouse gasses (GHG).
This achievement underscores the growing commitment of shippers to reduce emissions from their logistics operations, with notable companies such as Nestlé, Inditex, Novo Nordisk, Volvo Cars, Flying Tiger Copenhagen, and Europris leading the charge.
Johan Sigsgaard, Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer – Ocean at Maersk, expressed gratitude for the partnership with customers in enabling thousands of low and very low emission ocean transports.
The success of the ECO Delivery Ocean product, established in 2019, has been independently certified to reduce GHG emissions in ocean transport by more than 80%. Utilizing green fuels such as bio-diesel and green methanol, the product has led to significant GHG emission reductions.
Emma Mazhari, Head of Energy Markets in Maersk’s Energy Transition department, emphasized the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing and traceable feedstock for the green fuels used in low and very low emission ocean transports. Additionally, Maersk is investing in new methanol-enabled vessels, with the first eight very large ships entering the fleet in 2024.
Maersk’s sustainability efforts extend beyond ocean transport, with the launch of ECO Delivery Inland in 2023. This initiative utilizes electric trucks in select locations in the USA and pilots heavy-duty electric trucks in several countries. Looking ahead to 2024, Maersk plans to broaden its ECO Delivery Inland offerings across various geographies and transport modes, further strengthening its commitment to sustainability.
