NIKE sets new sustainability targets for 2025
Global sportswear giant NIKE is ramping up its commitment to sustainability by announcing new targets aimed at reducing its carbon emissions across its business and supply chain. In its 2023 Impact Report, NIKE outlined significant progress made in key sustainability areas, including a remarkable increase in renewable energy usage and substantial reductions in carbon emissions.
The report highlights several key achievements:
In a bid to further accelerate its sustainability efforts, NIKE has introduced a series of new carbon targets for 2025, in addition to its existing 2030 targets aligned with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These new targets aim to address challenges posed by a rapidly changing environment and bolster NIKE’s commitment to combating climate change.
NIKE’s strategies to achieve these targets include:
Despite progress, NIKE acknowledges challenges in reducing Scope 3 emissions, which have seen a slight increase of 3% against the 2015 baseline. This increase is attributed to business growth, the continued popularity of higher-carbon intensity materials in footwear, and rising emissions intensity in primary manufacturing regions like Vietnam.
To counteract these challenges, NIKE is implementing measures such as supplier adoption of renewable energy, transitioning to recycled materials, reducing waste sent to landfills, and minimizing inbound air freight.
NIKE’s continued commitment to sustainability and its ambitious targets signal a proactive approach to addressing climate change and fostering a more sustainable future for the sportswear industry and beyond.
