Raízen, Brazil’s third-largest energy corporation in terms of revenue, and Wärtsilä, a Finnish manufacturer, have joined forces to accelerate the decarbonization of the marine sector through the exploration of ethanol as a marine fuel.
This innovative initiative seeks to curb greenhouse gas emissions, offer sustainable fuel alternatives to customers, and foster discussions on energy transition within the global maritime industry.
With ethanol emerging as a promising marine fuel readily available today, the collaboration aims to bolster the sector’s efforts toward global decarbonization.
Under Wärtsilä’s fleet decarbonization program, significant strides have been made to introduce sustainable solutions to the market, enhance engine efficiency, and support the maritime sector’s decarbonization goals.
The partnership endeavours to integrate clean energy solutions into maritime operations through technology testing in Wärtsilä’s Sustainable Fuels engine laboratories, collaboration on discussions with ship designers and owners, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Raízen’s initial studies indicate that replacing fossil fuels with sustainably produced ethanol could slash CO2 emissions by up to 80% in a standard route from Brazil to Europe.
