Representatives from local oil and gas operators embarked on field visits to the Neftianye Kamni Oil Field and the Sangachal Terminal, organized by the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR). The aim was to exchange best practices in reducing methane emissions, aligning with a global initiative to combat methane emissions.
Led by SOCAR Vice President Afgan Isayev, the visit included participation from representatives of the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Attendees were briefed on SOCAR’s advanced methods for monitoring, measuring, inventorying, and decreasing emissions in oil and gas operations.
A highlight of the visit was the overview of the Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) Project at Neftianye Kamni, which builds upon successful emission reduction initiatives from 2016 to 2022. This project, initiated in 2023, aims to further decrease emissions and attain certification.
At the bp-operated Sangachal terminal, participants received detailed insights into emission reduction strategies and new methane measurement technologies. They also toured the remote control center of the Azeri Central East (ACE) platform, managed from the Sangachal terminal using innovative automated mechanisms.SOCAR and bp, as leading industrial figures in Azerbaijan, are jointly spearheading the Advancing Global Methane Reduction (AGMR) initiative under the Methane Guiding Principles. This initiative aims to promote efforts in measuring, accounting for, and reducing methane emissions in Azerbaijan’s oil and gas sector, while fostering the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and enhancing industry knowledge and skills in emission reduction.
