Energy giants TotalEnergies and Chevron, alongside major gas carrier Seapeak, have joined the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII), led by SafetyTech Accelerator. The move, announced on Tuesday, highlights the initiative’s growing importance in addressing methane emissions in the maritime sector.
With these additions, MAMII boasts over 20 members, solidifying its pivotal role in tackling methane abatement challenges. The new members bring valuable insights and commitment to MAMII’s mission of addressing the critical issue of ‘methane slip’.
In addition to welcoming the new members, MAMII revealed that it has selected four providers to conduct feasibility studies on technologies to reduce methane emissions from ships. Details of these studies will be released soon.
Methane slip, the release of unburnt methane, remains a significant obstacle to fully realizing the environmental benefits of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a maritime fuel. Launched in September 2022, MAMII aims to advance technologies for measuring and mitigating methane emissions in the maritime sector, bringing together industry leaders, innovators, and stakeholders.
Lloyd Bland from Chevron Shipping expressed the company’s commitment to reducing methane emissions from LNG carriers, highlighting MAMII as an opportunity to collaborate on best practices and explore new technologies. Similarly, Chris McDade from Seapeak emphasized the importance of minimizing the environmental impact of LNG, with MAMII providing a platform for testing technical solutions.
MAMII has already produced a comprehensive technology landscape report and curated an ecosystem of companies specializing in methane capture, measurement, and abatement. The initiative now focuses on conducting on-ship trials and expanding pilots to address fugitive methane emissions across LNG-fueled vessels.
Jerome Cousin from TotalEnergies emphasized the company’s dedication to reducing emissions along the gas value chain, underscoring the importance of improving the environmental benefits of LNG as a marine fuel.
Steve Price, MAMII Programme Director, hailed the inclusion of Chevron, Seapeak, and TotalEnergies as a collective commitment to addressing methane slip in LNG. Their participation reinforces MAMII’s role in driving impactful change and steering the maritime sector towards greater environmental responsibility.
