The Asian Development Bank has approved a $6 million grant for a $16.6 million initiative to enhance climate resilience. improve water and food security and create livelihood opportunities for rural communities in Timor-Leste.
The Asian Development Fund leads with $6 million, with $4.59 million from the Global Environment Facility and $3 million from Japan. Additional support comes from a $2.5 million grant provided by the Community Resilient Partnership Program Trust Fund—backed by the Nordic Development Fund and the governments of France and the United Kingdom—and a $500,000 grant from the Ireland Trust Fund for Building Climate Change and Disaster Resilience in Small Island Developing States.

Supporting Rural Communities
The Rural Resilience and Livelihood Improvement Sector Project will benefit around 46,000 people living in rural villages in Manatuto. These agriculture-dependent communities face economic challenges and are highly vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters. The project will boost agriculture and agroforestry productivity, improve water access, and focus on climate-smart strategies and livelihood development.
ADB Country Director for Timor-Leste, Stefania Dina, said, “Timor-Leste is highly vulnerable to climate and disaster risks and is one of the most food insecure economies in the world.”
He added, “By investing in rural communities, we aim to create pathways to a brighter and more sustainable future. Together, we can empower every farmer and family to thrive, fostering resilience and opportunity for generations to come.”
