According to a study published in Advanced Sciences, the Atlantic Ocean’s circulation, an enormous system of currents, is getting close to a tipping point and is “bad news for the climate system and humanity.”
Scientists are surprised by how fast it might happen but can’t say precisely when. They used computers and old data to make a warning system for when this circulation might break down.
This circulation system, Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), moves heat, carbon, and nutrients from warm areas to colder ones. This helps balance the Earth’s temperature and affects how much the Earth warms up because of human activities.
They discovered that Amoc is moving toward a sudden change, which hasn’t occurred in over 10,000 years. This change could have severe consequences for many parts of the world.
The paper’s lead author, René van Westen of Utrecht University, said, “What surprised us was the rate at which tipping occurs.”
“It will be devastating.”
“We are moving towards it. That is kind of scary,” van Westen added. “We need to take climate change much more seriously.”
