Extinction Rebellion (an international movement persuading governments to act on the climate emergency) will continue its campaign against Barclays’ fossil fuel investments.
Bishop’s Stortford Independent reported that Extinction Rebellion will protest outside the Barclays Bank at Bishop’s Stortford branch on January 20.
They plan to protest the loss of a stable climate and the human toll caused by Barclays’ decision not to divest from fossil fuel investments.
A spokeswoman for XR East Herts told Bishop’s Stortford Independent: “Barclays’ investments are truly shameful. It is no exaggeration to say that they are leading the way in putting their customers’ money into things that will endanger their lives…I’m sure people would be shocked if they knew what their money was being used for. In this action, we will be letting people know what Barclays are doing with their money and what they can do about it.”
In November, Extinction Rebellion activists ‘glued shut’ around 50 Barclays banks across the UK accusing the bank of ‘mega-funding fossil fuel projects.’
A Money Rebellion activist who took part in the action said: “Barclays is pumping billions into the fossil fuel industry, completely at odds with advice from the International Energy Agency, United Nations and IPCC. Barclays is choosing short-term profits over a liveable future, and a lot of us are sick of the measly progress they’re making, as they hide behind their lies and greenwash.”
An activist who took part in the action added: “We’re responding to public attitudes and targeting the perpetrators of climate breakdown, not ordinary people and we apologize for any inconvenience caused to staff and customers. The inconvenience we’ve caused this morning is small in comparison to the catastrophic events already happening due to Barclays’ financing of fossil fuels.”
