On Tuesday, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), responsible for environmental matters in the US, Mexico, and Canada, announced that it would assess a complaint regarding emissions from Pemex’s Cadereyta refinery near Monterrey.
According to a statement by the CEC, the agency has 30 days to determine if Mexico needs to address the complaint.
The agency oversees environmental matters in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada under the USMCA trade pact.
An anonymous complaint filed by a Mexican citizen accuses Mexico of not enforcing ecological laws effectively, especially concerning air emissions from the refinery in Monterrey.
Residents of Monterrey have long protested about the city’s air quality, prompting state officials to pledge action against the federal government to stop Pemex’s flaring activities at the refinery.
