Cadillac Fairview, managing the Pacific Centre and Waterfront Properties in Vancouver, is undertaking a $9.5 million decarbonization initiative. This project, backed by co-owners Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and Investment Management Corporation of Ontario, aims to reduce carbon emissions in the region’s office portfolio significantly.
Jesse Gregson, Cadillac Fairview’s vice president of office operations for Western Canada, highlights the importance of heat recovery retrofits in achieving decarbonization goals. These upgrades are expected to slash 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, contributing to Cadillac Fairview’s emissions reduction targets for 2030 and 2050.
The retrofits will cover over 2.3 million square feet of office and commercial space in Pacific Centre and Granville Square at Waterfront Properties. Heat recovery systems will capture waste heat from building operations, reducing the need for additional outside energy and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Certifications from the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) have recognized Cadillac Fairview’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Gregson emphasizes the substantial reductions in both emissions and energy consumption, leading to significant operating cost savings for the properties.
Government funding, including $1.5 million from the Canadian government’s Low Carbon Economy Fund, ensures the economic viability of the project. Despite challenges posed by limited space in existing buildings, innovative solutions are being implemented to accommodate the necessary equipment.
Cadillac Fairview’s decarbonization efforts align with Vancouver’s carbon reduction guidelines, aiming to halve emissions from buildings by 2030. The company’s internal targets, including a 35% greenhouse gas reduction by 2030 and a net-zero target by 2050, are further supported by these initiatives.
With a 19% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2017, Cadillac Fairview demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and collaboration with municipal goals. Gregson highlights the industry’s alignment with Vancouver’s objectives, emphasizing a collective effort towards achieving environmental targets.
