Helios Project Ltd., the creator of the Helios Cycle, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BlueScopeX Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of BlueScope Steel, a leading global steel producer based in Australia.
This MoU explores the integration of Helios Green Iron (HGI) into specific aspects of BlueScope’s steelmaking processes. The first phase of this partnership will consist of a pilot project, set to begin in 2026, during which Helios will supply HGI produced at its pilot facilities using its proprietary methods.

Helios has developed a method for producing iron and other metals by using sodium as a reducing agent. This innovative process consumes less energy than traditional techniques and generates no direct carbon emissions, emitting only oxygen as a byproduct.
According to Reuters this technology is suitable for producing green iron from various iron ores, including lower-grade varieties commonly found in Australia. Australia accounts for approximately half of the world’s seaborne iron ore supply.
Founded in 2018, Helios originally set out as a space technology firm focused on extracting oxygen from the moon. It has since evolved to create the Helios Cycle, a groundbreaking method that utilizes sodium to transform iron ore and other metals into iron, emitting only oxygen.
This innovation aims to assist the steel industry in its decarbonization efforts by enabling cost-effective green iron production from various types of iron ore, including lower-grade materials.

As an affiliated member of the World Steel Association, Helios is dedicated to finding sustainable alternatives to coal for the global steel sector. With nearly 2 billion tons of steel produced each year, the industry is responsible for approximately 10% of global CO2 emissions.
