Air New Zealand has sealed its most significant deal for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with Finland-based petroleum refiner Neste to decarbonise and meet its net-zero carbon emission targets.
The deal involves the purchase of nine million liters of the SAF, which will be produced at Neste’s Singapore refinery and supplied to Los Angeles International Airport between April 1 and November 30, 2024, the airline said in a statement.
The decision follows Air New Zealand’s recent efforts to engage with startups in the SAF sector to establish a supply partnership.
The airline said it expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% over the fuel’s life cycle compared to traditional fossil jet fuel, factoring in both production and transport emissions.

The company anticipates that SAF will make up about 20% of its total fuel consumption by 2030, adding that this aligns with the airline’s aims to reduce carbon intensity by 28.9% by the decade’s end and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The aviation industry, responsible for producing about 2% of the world’s emissions, faces significant challenges to decarbonise as it is reliant on the uptake of sustainable air fuel, which is the only solution to reduce emissions in the sector.
However, despite global regulators’ efforts to boost the use of sustainable fuel, it currently makes up less than 1% of the worldwide fuel supply, Air New Zealand Chair Dame Therese Walsh said.
