The world’s biggest commercial vehicle maker, Daimler and Abu Dhabi have entered into an initial agreement for the supply of green hydrogen to fuel future fuel-cell trucks in Europe for the Gulf state.
Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, known as Masdar, announced collaboration on Thursday.
“Our initiative marks an initial step for us to enable the supply of liquid green hydrogen in Europe,” Daimler Truck Chief Executive Officer Martin Daum said in a statement.
Masdar is set to invest more than $30 billion in renewable energy projects, aiming to make the Gulf a pioneer in green hydrogen.
In the collaboration with Masdar, Daimler Truck sees itself as a force for change and logistics planning, according to Daum in a call with Bloomberg reporters.
The truck company doesn’t intend to run hydrogen transport ships, pipelines, or gas stations. Instead, Daimler Truck will invest in creating fuel-cell trucks, with the first sales of these hydrogen-powered long-haul trucks beginning in 2027.
Their goal is to sell 10,000 hydrogen-powered trucks each year by 2030.
In 2021, Daimler, Volvo, and Volkswagen’s truck company Traton joined forces to create a European charging network for trucks and buses.
They aim to invest €500 million (about $545 million) to establish at least 1,700 charging points by around 2027.
