The government of the Special Administrative Region (SAR) of Hong Kong is set to inject tens of millions of Hong Kong dollars into initiatives to transform the city into a Green Shipping Hub.
As part of this endeavor, Hong Kong aims to establish itself as a high-quality green fuel bunkering center, with plans to attract more ships to call at Hong Kong Port for bunkering services, according to sources familiar with the matter.
In Wednesday’s budget delivery, a series of measures will be introduced to develop Hong Kong into a green and smart port.
These measures include the establishment of a high-quality green fuel bunkering center to explore the feasibility of providing local vessels with clean energy through the use of green methanol. Compared to traditional shipping fuels, green methanol can reduce sulfur compounds by approximately 95 percent, significantly lowering emissions.
Additionally, the government plans to study the expansion of refueling facilities along shipping routes and the development of related infrastructure.
This includes the construction of transportation pipelines for fuel production. Furthermore, the budget is expected to address research on simplifying the process of transporting sustainable aviation fuel and its storage.
An action plan outlining these initiatives is anticipated to be outlined within the year to promote sustainable practices and bolster Hong Kong’s position as a leader in green shipping and fuel technologies.
