MAN Energy Solutions intends to supply its inaugural ammonia-fueled engine for installation on a new vessel in Japan later this year, with plans to offer ammonia-powered machines to clients after 2027, as stated by its CEO Uwe Lauber. Ammonia is one of the alternative fuels shippers consider to decrease emissions.
While the shipping industry handles about 90% of global trade, it contributes nearly 3% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions. Installing engines that run on cleaner fuels could contribute to mitigating global warming effects.
“Actual sales (of ammonia engines), I would not foresee it before 2027,” Lauber said.
“If people believe this will come tomorrow that’s a dream, this will not come. We need to build up infrastructure,” he said.

“A lot of work needs to be done also on safety devices with the classification societies. There are no rules today available on how to design an ammonia system on a ship,” Lauber added.
The company aims to grow its Singapore staff from the current 250 to 400-500, while also providing training to clients on optimizing the operation of dual-fuel engines, according to Lauber.
