OMV Petrom, an integrated energy producer has announced the construction of a new production unit at Petrobrazi refinery for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Renewable Diesel (HVO) with an annual capacity of 250,000 tons. OMV Petrom will become the first large-scale sustainable fuel producer in the region with this SAF unit at the Petrobrazi Refinery. The investment is part of the company’s strategy for energy transition and the reduction of carbon emissions.
Christina Verchere, CEO of OMV Petrom, said,”Investing in sustainable fuel production is part of our Strategy 2030 and reflects OMV Petrom’s commitment to energy transition and reducing carbon emissions. Sustainable fuels are essential to decarbonize transportation, especially in sectors where electrification is difficult to implement, such as aviation. Between 2022 and 2030, we are allocating 35% of our investment budget towards projects that support the energy transition, in Romania and the region.”
A €750 Million Investment in Clean Mobility
OMV Petrom produces SAF and HVO from renewable raw materials such as used vegetable oils and animal fats. OMV Petrom will invest €560 million in the sustainable fuel plant and €190 million in the construction of two green hydrogen plants. The new facilities will be integrated within existing infrastructure to make fuel manufacturing, storage, and transportation easier, in order to meet the demand for clean mobility.

Sustainable Production Process for Fuel
Refiners manufacture SAF and HVO by processing renewable raw materials such as used vegetable oil and animal fat. Advanced refining processes transform these materials into renewable fuels that closely resemble conventional kerosene and diesel in physical properties.
The fuels reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 65%, and therefore they represent an important milestone in sustainable transport The plant can vary raw materials and product mix based on market demand and available feedstocks.
Growing EV Charging Infrastructure for the Future
OMV Petrom is also spending on electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure to support its low-carbon fuel efforts. It plans to take Romania’s charging points above 5,000 by 2030 to enhance cleaner transportation options.
