At the Port of Yokohama, the M/V Tamesis successfully bunkered 400 metric tons of Bio Bunker B24 , supplied by Mitsubishi Corporation Energy Co., Ltd. This milestone reflects Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental impact and promoting sustainability in the shipping industry.
Expanding Biofuel Supply Locations
Wallenius Wilhelmsen expanded biofuel supply locations in 2023, starting with key ports in Belgium, Korea, and Singapore. Adding Japan to this list strengthens the company’s ability to operate more sustainably and efficiently across its global network.
Ambitious Emission Reduction Goals
Wallenius Wilhelmsen aims for net zero emissions by 2040, reducing well to wake greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. Additionally, the Science Based Targets initiative approved these goals.
Yasuyuki Sakurai, Senior Manager of the Orcelle Accelerator taskforce at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, said, “Achieving these targets require a major shift in energy sources from conventional fuels to low and zero-carbon alternatives. Expanding supply locations and securing sufficient biofuels remain a priority, and we are pleased to have conducted our first B24 VLSFO blended biofuel bunkering trial in Yokohama.
He added, “While our Reduced Carbon Service customers fully support our mass balance concept, ensuring sufficient biofuel usage across our entire fleet and trade lanes is key to achieving our long-term sustainability goals,”
Mitsuo Ueda, General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation Energy Co., Ltd., mentioned that in anticipation of the growing demand for biofuel in the marine sector, the company has started storing biofuel at their oil terminal in Onahama (Fukushima Prefecture) and supplying B24 in Tokyo Bay using barges. He praised Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s leadership in decarbonizing shipping and reaffirmed Mitsubishi Corporation Energy’s commitment to a sustainable future. He also said the company will keep supplying stable biofuels to meet industry demands and contribute to building a carbon neutral society.
