Tech giant IBM has unveiled a new commitment to invest $45 million in its social impact program, the IBM Sustainability Accelerator, as part of a pioneering initiative aimed at bolstering city resiliency through technology-focused climate adaptation solutions.
Launched in 2022, IBM’s Sustainability Accelerator harnesses IBM technology and expertise to amplify non-profit and government initiatives aimed at developing solutions to help vulnerable populations tackle environmental challenges. Thus far, the program has propelled 15 projects globally across three cohorts, focusing on diverse areas such as sustainable agriculture, clean energy, and water management.
In its latest endeavor, IBM has issued a new request for proposals (RFP) for the upcoming cohort, targeting solutions to advance city resiliency in alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goal 11, “Sustainable Cities and Communities.” This initiative seeks to address challenges faced by cities amid rapid urbanization, including environmental degradation and inadequate urban infrastructure, which can be exacerbated by climate change and extreme weather events.
Potential project areas under the new RFP include AI foundation models and geospatial analytics, weather and climate forecasting to predict impacts on natural and built infrastructure, and asset management for public services. IBM’s $45 million investment, spanning five years, will comprise cash contributions and in-kind donations of technology and services. Selection criteria for applicants will encompass the level of support provided to vulnerable communities, the feasibility and sustainability of proposed technology solutions, and transparency in measurement and reporting.
Moreover, IBM has forged a strategic collaboration with global professional services firm EY for the Sustainability Accelerator program. EY’s involvement in the resilient cities cohort will encompass assistance in the RFP selection process, organizational development coaching, and capacity-building workshops, further enriching the program’s impact and reach.
With this ambitious investment and collaborative partnership, IBM aims to drive meaningful innovation and empower communities to confront urban environmental challenges with cutting-edge technological solutions, fostering greater city resiliency in the face of an evolving climate landscape.
