The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi has announced the implementation of the new Delhi Solar Policy, 2024, aimed at significantly increasing the adoption of solar power systems in homes and businesses across the city.
The policy, which was recently notified after receiving necessary clearances, seeks to triple Delhi’s solar power consumption from 1500MW to 4500MW by March 2027, representing approximately 20% of the city’s total power demand.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the government has introduced larger incentives and subsidies to encourage the installation of solar panels. Power Minister Atishi revealed that the government plans to establish camps across the city to facilitate the setup of solar panels, streamlining the process for consumers.
The core incentives of the policy include a subsidy of $27 per kilowatt (KW) for the installation of solar systems, capped at a maximum of $135. Additionally, individuals will receive compensation ranging from $0.01 to $0.03 per unit of solar energy generated, contributing to reductions in their power bills. Moreover, every unit of solar energy generated will offset a unit consumed from the power grid, further reducing reliance on conventional power sources.
The new policy also mandates all government buildings with an area exceeding 500sqm to install solar panels within the next three years. The government anticipates an expenditure of approximately $77 million towards the policy’s implementation. Officials estimate that the cost of installing solar panels, expected to last around 25 years, will be recovered within four years due to additional subsidies provided by the government over the next five years.
To ensure effective implementation, a committee will be formed under the state power minister to monitor progress, with a dedicated “Delhi Solar Cell” to be established within the power department.
The policy marks a significant step towards promoting renewable energy adoption and reducing dependency on traditional power sources in the capital city of Delhi.
