EU negotiators reached a historic agreement on Monday to ban single-use plastic packaging for items like fresh fruit and vegetables, mini hotel toiletries, and fast food in restaurants.
The legislation aims to address the growing issue of packaging waste in the EU, which reached 188.7 kilograms per person in 2021. Under the new rules, all packaging on the EU market must be recyclable by 2030, and by 2035, recyclable packaging must be recycled “at scale.”
Additionally, take-away businesses will be required to allow customers to bring their own containers for drinks or food. While the deal is seen as a significant step forward, it represents a compromise from the European Commission’s original proposal, which faced intense lobbying from affected sectors.
The Commission, the Parliament, and the Council must still approve the final text.
