The Kenyan government released draft Carbon Market Regulations, on 29th January, inviting public scrutiny and submissions until early February 2024.
The regulations aim to establish a framework for implementing carbon market projects in Kenya, providing guidelines for social contributions and supporting greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
This move aligns with the government’s commitment to nationally determined contributions and follows discussions by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) on assessing Kenya’s carbon market ecosystem.
The CMA is exploring engagement with stakeholders, mapping the sector, and analyzing demand and supply conditions to inform the policy framework for overseeing compliant and voluntary carbon markets.
Additionally, there are plans to support the establishment of a carbon credits exchange on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
