During a climate change dialogue at the China Development Forum, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc., emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in aiding businesses to reduce their carbon footprint.
Cook participated in the discussion as part of his company’s efforts to demonstrate commitment to China, following meetings with Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, where plans for increased investment in Apple’s supply chain, stores, and research in China were announced.
Apple has set ambitious goals for reducing its carbon footprint, promoting the Apple Watch as its inaugural carbon-neutral product. Cook centred his remarks and activities during his visit on this theme.

Apple is dedicating significant investment and resources towards advancing its AI development, particularly due to the emergence of more assertive competitors such as OpenAI and its ChatGPT platform, which have outpaced Apple in this field.
“We are making great progress, we are not there yet, and the road ahead requires more innovation,” Cook said of the company’s environmental goals.
Cook added that AI “provides an enormous toolkit for every company that’s wishing to be carbon neutral or to lower its emissions by a substantial amount.”
The environmental focus of Cook’s trip, highlighted by opening a large new store in Shanghai on Thursday, could have been selected to sidestep potential geopolitical tensions.
