The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $311 million loan to improve and modernise the electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure in Nepal.
This substantial funding supports the country’s sustainable development by ensuring reliable energy access and fostering local economic growth.

Capacity Building and Technological Upgrades
The loan will help the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) modernise its training centre and expand smart meters.
Additionally, it will support establishing a data recovery centre and deploying a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.
ADB will also implement awareness programs focused on safe and effective energy usage, promoting a culture of sustainability in energy consumption.
ADB’s Asian Development Fund allocated a $30 million grant to support training and capacity-building initiatives.
This funding will help the NEA to adopt modern communication tools for better hydropower management and electricity distribution.
The upgrades will enhance Nepal’s position in the regional energy market by facilitating power trading with neighbouring nations.
The project will train women and marginalised groups to create jobs in the energy sector.
Additionally, it will encourage the growth of energy-focused enterprises.
NEA and government agencies will receive support to improve projects in energy management and new technologies.
