Spain’s Official Credit Institute (ICO) has committed to invest €15 million in Spanish insurance group Mapfre’s green biofuel fund.
Mapfre, in collaboration with IAM Carbonzero, launched the Mapfre Energías Renovables II vehicle last year. This vehicle marks Europe’s first fund dedicated to biomethane investment—a 100% green biofuel derived from agricultural waste.
ICO’s investment will be channeled through Axis, its venture capital subsidiary. Axis will utilize its own fund, Fond‑ICO Sostenibilidad e Infraestructuras, which focuses on promoting investments in sustainable mobility, renewable energies, and circular economy infrastructure projects.

The ICO Group, managing EU Next Generation funding during Spain’s Recovery Plan, will invest in Mapfre’s green biofuel fund through its ICO Verde initiative, supporting Spain’s green transition.
Mapfre Energías Renovables II, classified as an Article 9 product under the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, is developing nine plants across Extremadura, Castile and León, and Madrid. Construction is expected to start in late 2024 and early 2025, with operations beginning in 2025.
