Carbon removal company Equatic has partnered with Arup, a design and engineering firm. Together, they will build the world’s first large scale ocean carbon dioxide (CO2) removal facility. They are working together to eliminate global carbon emissions and provide the needed solutions to help mitigate climate change.
Seawater Electrolytic Carbon Removal Process
The two firms will collaborate to identify suitable deployment locations for Equatic’s patented seawater electrolytic carbon removal process. This pioneering technology is designed to unlock the ocean’s natural capability to absorb atmospheric CO2. The process works based on seawater electrolysis and direct air capture, converting CO2 into solid minerals for long-term storage.
Arup will oversee site evaluation, infrastructure development for the project, and acquiring the permissions needed. The collaboration is one step towards deploying large scale carbon removal solutions. As part of the collaboration, Equatic will remove over 100,000 tons of CO2 annually, producing 3,600 tons of green hydrogen by 2030.

A Promising Solution for Carbon Storage
Equatic’s seawater electrolytic process offers a promising pathway toward carbon dioxide storage. Converting CO2 into solid minerals will store carbon away from the atmosphere for over a century. Additionally, this process will produce carbon-negative hydrogen, which will further support the transition to cleaner energy.
Both companies have goals to advance carbon removal technologies and scaling operations globally. Equatic is already working on introducing modular pilot plants in California and Singapore, with a demonstration plant expected to come online soon.
Bringing Expertise to the Table
The collaboration also includes the addition of Dervilla Mitchell, former Arup Group Deputy Chair, to Equatic’s Industry Advisory Board. With her extensive industry experience, she will help guide the project’s development and strategy.
Expanding Operations Globally
Equatic aims to reach gigaton levels of carbon removal as part of its long-term climate goals. The partnership with Arup will help identify strategic locations and partners to accelerate this mission. With Arup’s expertise and global reach, Equatic is well-positioned to scale its operations and deploy ocean-based carbon removal technologies worldwide.
This partnership marks a significant step in advancing the carbon removal industry. By combining Equatic’s innovative technology and Arup’s expertise in infrastructure and planning, the two companies aim to deliver the first large-scale ocean-based CO2 removal facility. As the world seeks solutions to climate change, partnerships like this provide hope for a sustainable future.
