NTPC Signs MoUs for Renewable Energy Projects in Madhya Pradesh

NTPC Ltd. signs multiple MoUs with Madhya Pradesh Government to develop renewable energy projects, boosting green power generation and energy storage.

NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated energy organization, and its subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) signed a number of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Madhya Pradesh Government at the Global Investors Summit, Bhopal, on February 24-25, 2025. The agreements focus on developing renewable energy projects in Madhya Pradesh, including solar, wind, pumped hydro, and carbon-free sources.

The first MoU signed between NGEL and Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited (MPPGCL) provides a platform for a massive renewable energy project in the state. The project aims to set up renewable energy capacities of up to 20 GW, with an estimated investment of Rs. 1,20,000 Crore.

This resulted in the formation of a Joint Venture Company (JVC), which will assist in meeting the Renewable Generation Obligation (RGO) of MPPGCL and the Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) of Madhya Pradesh’s Distribution Companies (DISCOMs).

NTPC’s Pledge towards Green Power Generation

The second MoU was signed between NTPC Ltd. and Madhya Pradesh Government to develop non-fossil fuel-based power plants, putting Rs. 80,000 Crore to use. Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) is brokering the pact to accelerate the state’s shift to green energy.

Pumped Hydro Storage Project for Energy Storage Solutions

NTPC and the Madhya Pradesh government also signed a deal to build an 800 MW Pumped Hydro Storage Project for Rs. 4,000 Crore. The project will improve energy storage capacity, complementing the state’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The MoUs were exchanged in the presence of Dr. Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh, and Shri Gurdeep Singh, Managing Director and Chairman, NTPC Ltd., with senior government officials from the Government of Madhya Pradesh and senior officials from NTPC Ltd. These ventures will enhance India’s energy transition, facilitating achieving Net Zero targets and increasing renewable energy capabilities.
