UK is not prepared for the worst 2024 heat waves, committee says
Environmental Audit Committee said in a report published Wednesday that the UK government’s plans to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures published last July mostly reiterated existing policy and don’t show “sufficient urgency or ambition.”
According to a key parliamentary committee, the UK government is not taking effective action or preparing the country for the hotter summers it’s going to face. The committee consists of lawmakers who assess how government policies and programs affect the environment.
The intense heat affects various aspects, including work productivity, water supplies, and public health.
The report suggests that issues like disrupted sleep patterns alone cost the economy £60 billion ($76 billion) each year.
Last year was the warmest on record, and Britain’s Met Office already forecasts 2024 to be even hotter.
