Climate activists storm into Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s Toronto office, urging the government to include bank climate regulations in its 2024 budget.
Greenpeace activists, dressed in blue jumpsuits and carrying sleeping bags, staged a sit-in protest while the minister was absent from her office.
In a letter to Freeland, Keith Stewart, Greenpeace Canada’s senior energy strategist, expressed concerns about delays in implementing promised climate policies and the lack of progress towards the Liberal government’s 2050 net-zero goals.
Some environmental groups and investors accuse Canada’s largest banks of ‘greenwashing,’ claiming that initiatives like sustainability-linked financing (SLF) are only superficial attempts to appear environmentally friendly and reduce carbon footprints.

The letter also called for an end to any further delays or weakening of regulations concerning emissions from oil and gas, as well as the transition away from fossil fuel-powered cars and light trucks by 2035.
