Brazil, on Monday, revealed its collaboration with the world’s largest financial climate coalition to enhance funding for clean energy and nature restoration initiatives, including the reforestation of the Amazon rainforest.
The Brazilian development bank BNDES will collaborate with the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), a global coalition comprising asset managers, banks, and insurance firms, to mobilize public and private financing.
The partnership resembles ongoing efforts to assist countries like Indonesia’s $20 billion program to eliminate coal. However, Brazil’s announcement lacks specific multi-billion dollar investment pledges.
BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante refrained from disclosing the expected investment amount or launch timeline but emphasized that the government would prioritize swift action.

GFANZ co-chair Mark Carney, a former Bank of England governor on the sidelines of a green finance event in Sao Paulo said, “This is just much more comprehensive across the whole economy as opposed to just energy and it’s moving forward as opposed to dealing with stranded assets.”
Carney and Mercadante say that the investment platform would be utilized to grow Brazil’s extensive renewable energy sector and initiatives like the “Arc of Reforestation,” which aims to rehabilitate 60,000 square kilometers (23,160 square miles) of degraded or destroyed Amazon rainforest.
