During COP29 in Baku, the European Investment Bank Group (EIBG), alongside the European Commission (EC) and the Solar Impulse Foundation (SIF), unveiled a fresh initiative aimed at boosting energy efficiency investments among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) throughout Europe.
This initiative helps SMEs adopt cleaner operations, reduce energy costs, and enhance competitiveness through eco-friendly practices.
The program forms a key part of the EIB Group’s Strategic Roadmap 2024-2027, facilitating pilot projects for innovative energy financing.
This initiative supports the EU’s aim to reduce energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030 and double global energy efficiency. The program is expected to lower energy costs by 30% and reduce energy-related CO2 emissions by 50% for businesses.

Tackling Energy Efficiency Barriers
Many SMEs find it challenging to invest in energy-efficient technology due to significant upfront costs and restricted resources. The EIB and SIF initiative aims to overcome these challenges by introducing “servitisation” or “efficiency as-a-service.”
SMEs can use energy-efficient services like heating or lighting without purchasing equipment, as the service provider retains ownership.
This setup helps companies avoid large initial expenditures, simplifying the process of adopting energy-efficient solutions.
Ambroise Fayolle, EIB Vice President for Climate Action, said, “Studies show that small and medium-sized businesses find it much harder to invest in energy efficiency than large companies.”
He added, “At the same time SMEs generate about 60% of Europe’s emissions, and unless we help them to become more efficient, it will be impossible to achieve EU climate goals. Our initiative will support a host of energy efficiency measures, contributing to a more sustainable future.”

Partnerships for Innovation and Scale
The Solar Impulse Foundation will contribute to the initiative by leveraging its “Solar Impulse Efficient Solution” label, a certification that endorses over 1,600 clean technologies.
The foundation will also provide expertise and a network to amplify the program’s reach and effectiveness.
The European Commission, through its InvestEU program, will support this joint effort to facilitate energy efficiency financing.
