The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union (EU) announced a significant collaboration to enhance energy efficiency in Yerevan, Armenia.
A €10 million EU grant and €25 million EIB loan will renovate over 100,000 square meters of public buildings. The project, part of a broader sustainability initiative, aims to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions while improving public infrastructure.
Targeted Upgrades for Public Buildings
The municipality of Yerevan will oversee the refurbishment of six polyclinics and 32 kindergartens.
The renovations will focus on several energy-efficient upgrades, such as improving building envelopes, replacing windows, installing more efficient boilers, integrating solar water systems, and upgrading lighting to energy-saving alternatives.
These targeted upgrades are expected to significantly reduce energy consumption, extend the lifespan of public buildings, and enhance the comfort of the facilities for their users.

Teresa Czerwińska, the EIB Vice President said, “This EU grant accelerates the Yerevan municipality’s efforts within this transformative project, advancing Armenia toward a greener, more sustainable future.”
She added, “The project will not only reduce Yerevan’s energy consumption and carbon footprint but will greatly enhance the quality of life for children, educators, patients, and healthcare workers alike. Armenian leaders welcomed the initiative as a vital step toward sustainable development. Finance Minister Vahe Hovhannisyan highlighted its role in meeting long-term environmental and economic goals.
Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan underscored the importance of such projects in driving sustainable growth, job creation, and a higher quality of life for citizens.
A Step Towards Global Sustainability Goals
This initiative supports the EU’s Global Gateway policy and is a component of the Economic and Investment Plan for the Eastern Partnership.
It supports Armenia’s goals for a green economy and increases its climate resilience.
