The European Commission plans to suggest on Tuesday that the EU should reduce the amount of greenhouse gases it produces by 90% by the year 2040.
This proposal will test how much support there is for continuing Europe’s strong efforts to fight climate change, especially with EU elections coming up.
The goal for 2040 is to help EU countries stay on course between the existing 2030 climate goal and the ultimate aim of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
This means Europe wants to stop adding to climate change by balancing out the amount of greenhouse gases it emits with the amount it removes from the environment.
“To continue the European Green Deal into the decade up to 2040, extra focus will be needed on the enabling conditions for businesses and citizens to master the transition,” said a draft of the EU plan, seen by Reuters, which could change before it is published.
The draft document also explained how not addressing climate change could lead to more severe and damaging extreme weather events. It mentioned that failing to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels could result in extra costs totaling 2.4 trillion euros by the year 2050.
