The United Arab Emirates, which hosted COP28 last year, along with Azerbaijan and Brazil, hosts of the upcoming UN climate summits, announced on Tuesday their collaboration to advocate for more ambitious emissions reduction targets.
Preparations for the 2024 and 2025 climate talks occur as some countries face political resistance to climate action despite increasing extreme weather occurrences and frequent breaking of temperature records each month.
“We cannot afford to lose momentum, we must do everything we can to keep 1.5 C within reach,” said Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE’s president of last year’s negotiations.
The goal of limiting global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels was established within the framework of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
At the upcoming COP29 summit in November in Baku, Azerbaijan, the primary objective is to establish a fresh global target for climate finance aimed at developing nations.
However, certain climate diplomats anticipate Brazil’s 2025 summit as the subsequent significant milestone for global climate diplomacy.
Nearly 200 countries must submit revised national pledges for reducing CO2 emissions in preparation for COP30.
