London is not equipped for the consequences of climate change: report
London is inadequately prepared for the imminent challenges of heatwaves, flooding, and rising sea levels, according to a report commissioned by Mayor Sadiq Khan.
The report highlights the urgent need for a “step change” in planning and investment to address the escalating risks posed by climate change.
Emma Howard Boyd, the chair of the report and former head of the Environment Agency, emphasized the critical requirement to adapt national infrastructure in addition to reducing emissions.
The findings underscore the real and immediate threats faced by Londoners, with vulnerable communities, including the elderly, children, low-income families, marginalized groups, and those with health vulnerabilities, particularly at risk.
Recommendations include bolstering flood defenses along the River Thames and enhancing housing standards.
Mayor Khan pledged to conduct a multi-agency exercise to assess the capital’s readiness for severe heat later this year. Boyd emphasized that addressing vulnerabilities is crucial for the overall resilience of the city.
